The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge

By Dionne Cameron
The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge

Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline," (NIV).  To fear God is to recognize Him as the Creator, who is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent.  It is to acknowledge that we are the creation while He is the Creator of the universe, including all human beings.  It is to recognize that all dominion, power, and authority belong to Him.  He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.  It is to recognize that our lives are in His hands.  It is to rely on Him in all circumstances, and humbly submit to His Lordship.  God has the final say.

On the other hand, God considers someone a fool if they do not want to learn of Him.  Proverbs 1:7b says, "..but fools despise wisdom and instruction," (NIV).  God also says in His Word that the fool says in his heart there is no God.  It is foolish to not believe in God and not to fear the LORD.  Romans 1:20-21 says, "For since the creation of the whole world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have clearly been seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened," (NIV).

It is foolish to not fear the lord because His wrath awaits whoever refuses to acknowledge Him as God the Father and Jesus the Son.  John 3:36 says, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them," (NIV).

Romans 2:4-11 says, "But because of your stubborness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when His righteous judgement will be revealed.  God will give to each person according to what he has done.  To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, He will give eternal life.  But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.  There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.  For God does not show favoritism," (NIV).

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.  Let us be wise and fear the Lord.  Be a voice for the gospel.  Wear Scriptures!
